Greed-Driven Theology

A Grace to You Blog question regarding “Greed-Driven Theology”

So, which comes first—the bad theology or the greed? Use Scripture to support your position.

My answer is below – what’s your answer?

2 Peter 2:2 & 3 - (NASB) "Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep."

I think that if we read from left to right, we may find our answer (I don't claim to have the correct answer, I don't have a PHD or anything like that, but in my studying, I believe this could be an option for an answer to the question).

"Many will follow their sensuality (KJV - pernicious ways) and because of them (the 'many that follow'), the way of Truth will be maligned..." I think that this is one of those "because / then" situations. BECAUSE of their sensuality (perniciousness, covetousness, selfishness, greed), they THEN pervert the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and twist, mangle, distort the God of the Bible. A condition of an un-regenerated heart - desiring and ultimately creating a God that is more appealing (Idolitry). I also believe this is how un-regenerated, false-teachers connect and lure (un-regenerated) people in. Through the lusts of the flesh - whether it's immorality or 'self-help / prosperity'... or whatever god they can create to meet the selfish needs and desires of the human flesh. (James 1:14 & 15)

Reading on: "and in their greed they will exploit you with false words..." - Pretty self-explanitory. Greed, THEN false words (yes??).

Also – Luke 6:45 - "The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart." (emphasis added) - reading left to right.

In Christ,
